BREAKING: Luke Creasey, 29, has resigned as Labor candidate for Melbourne on Friday over online comments he made about rape when he was 22. MORE:

Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s campaign has been derailed by the resignation of Liberal candidate for Lyons, Jessica Whelan. Ms Whelan has been accused of saying Muslims should be banned from Australia and Sharia Law supporters should have their genitals mutilated. While she vehemently denies making the 'vulgar' slurs, she has admitted to previously making 'inappropriate' comments on social media.

Mr Morrison accepted Ms Whelan’s resignation on Friday, saying her views ‘do not represent the views of the Liberal Party’. Meanwhile, the Labor Party is navigating candidate problems of its own, after 29-year-old candidate for Melbourne Luke Creasey made rape jokes on social media. Mr Shorten defended his candidate on Friday, saying Mr Creasey was 22-years-old when he made the comments and was ‘mortified’ by what he said. Luke Creasey has also reportedly resigned over the social media scandal.

So younger than Cameron Bancroft...

More breaking news John Alexander jokes about rape but still able to run

I know my son made no similar posts or comments at any age and being raised by a single mum he always respected women. Is it too much to ask to select someone we'd want to vote for?

Well Well Well, TAKE NOTE YOUNG CHILDREN, YOUR PAST CATCHES UP WITH YOU ✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️

news_australian Suck eggs!

Resigned. What a gutless bunch, those Labor Leaders. All the imagery, or big women policies, first real test to see if they really mean what they say. No they don't. Where were Tanya, Penny & Co, strong women would have had Shifty's ball's for being gutless.

John Alexander next?

Another one bites the dust

Can we please get back to policy, this is a side show. Have we become so illiberal that a tweet or post years ago now disqualifies you from parliament or have we become wowsers.

Candidates have to be squeaky clean when running for office, and their personal or hateful views kept to themselves....Once in office, it's a different matter, they can release all their views ,to the public, and not face any consequences..

Shouldn't Labors Fiona Phillips be ousted for her comments?

Twitter trending can't keep up with billshortenmp's flip flops auspol ausvotes19

That means it is time for John Alexander to go. He made racist rape jokes when he was a middle aged man.

ok, that's done, no matter what he says he is still a candidate (on the ballot) & his prefs will still be distributed, nothing really changes!he made lurid jokes about women,he's gay,he was 22, & it was 7yrs ago(is there a statute of limitations on insulting tweets?) life goes on

Social media is going to rule out a huge number of people in the future holding public office. It’s a sobering lesson that nothing you write on any platform in our digital age can ever be removed. You can’t just erase or rip up mistakes, errors or true thoughts from now on.

If the shoe fits, step down John Alexander.

Sauce for the goose ?..................

Bill Shorten, the leader of the party that says they're for woman's equality supported this guy after even after he knew what was posted while wearing his green tie today. Bill should of stood him down immediately once he found out about the post.

Props for not claiming he was hacked at least

Politics aside (I wouldn't vote for Labor with a ten-foot pole), we have to stop destroying people because of jokes they made on the internet. If there are no real policy implications, we shouldn't care.

The right thing to do. Also LiberalAus Tick tock. Comments made by Alexander when he was 45 👇

Or does he just blend in? This is insane. The Islamic ideology is responsible for the violence and terrorism worldwide. It continues to be a threat monitored by governments globally. To dislike the notion of a hegemonic ideology setting up shop in your country is not a 'slur,' its common sense. auspol
