Moyer Reporter covering breaking news Email Bio Follow May 1 at 12:24 PM An African American woman filed a federal lawsuit against a recently desegregated Mississippi school district last week, claiming a white student was named salutatorian of their graduating class despite having a lower grade-point average.
In May, school officials told Olecia James, a black senior at the new high school, that her weighted grade-point average would be lowered after she lost “quality points” earned in courses taken at the historically black school, according to a federal suit filed in Mississippi’s Northern District. Olecia James After James objected, the suit alleges, officials said her “quality point average” of 4.41 would be restored, but still named a white male student with a 4.34 average salutatorian.James “suffered loss of scholarships” and “humiliation” as a result, according to the suit, which seeks monetary damages, a change in school policy and a declaration that James is salutatorian.

JoseGrinanFOX26 I don't know about you, JoseGrinanFOX26, bit we voted for our valedictorian. It didn't matter if they had the highest GPA. They gave us the top however many and we voted as a class. This law suit is rediculous of the school follows this same practice.
I wasn't named valedictorian of my high school class despite being ranked 1 for the entirety of my four years as a student there (rankings were calculated twice per year; I was 1 EVERY semester). They held a speech competition to determine the valedictorian & salutatorian. 😡

I'm sure the school ultimately has the legitimate county coded right to choose titles based on elements like behavior, conduct, clubs, community service, etc. Good luck.
So here are some facts left out of the headline: 1. She went to a previously lower quality school 2. The gpa's were less than .1 apart(without quality accounted for) 3. They didn't interview anyone from the school to get their side of it.

Grades are a good chunk of what qualifies for this sort of thing, but you also got to look at attendance, behavior, and etc. If they had around the same grades and he had better attendance and behavior of course the other student would be chosen.
