Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

1. The Supreme Court has made it clear that it does not take orders from President Muhammadu Buhari, as it remained an independent arm of government. The apex court, in a statement signed by the Director, Information and Press, Dr. Festus Akande, also denied reports that six of its directors were behind the exit of former Chief Justice of Nigeria , Justice Walter Onnoghen.

3. The Police in Edo State said on Monday in Benin that it had arrested a man alleged to be a cultist and serial killer, who had murdered no less than 38 victims. A statement signed by DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, spokesperson of the Police Command in the state, said that the suspect was arrested last Tuesday following the receipt of credible intelligence. Nwabuzor said that the 37-year-old suspect was on a mission to kill a victim before his arrest.

5. The Nigeria Immigration Service on Monday, commenced issuance of the new 10-year validity enhanced passport booklet, which is part of comprehensive reform, approved by the Federal Government in January. Comptroller-General of the Service, Mr Muhammad Babandede, said this at the ceremony held at the NIS Headquarters, Abuja. The 64-page 10-year standard passport costs N70, 000, while the 32-page five-year standard passport costs N25, 000.

7. The Zamfara State Governor, Governor Abdulaziz Yari, has warned that another circle of recession will come by mid-2020. Yari further revealed that governors have unanimously agreed that borrowing is not a reliable alternative to solving the country’s economic problems. The governor stated this on Monday at the opening of the three-day retreat for returning governors and governors-elect in Abuja.
