WASHINGTON, DC - MARCH 20: Rep. Jasmine Crockett speaks during a press conference outside the U.S. Capitol March 20, 2024 in Washington, DC.
A group of Texas Republicans asked Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, to resign Monday, citing her previous support of legislation that would have removed Secret Service protection for former President Donald Trump. Rep. Crockett sponsored the Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable, or DISGRACED, Former Protectees Act, in April. TheThe legislation would have applied to Trump, who was convicted of falsifying business records to conceal a crime in May. Secret Service killed the man who tried to assassinate Trump at a Pennsylvania rally Saturday while other agents covered and escorted the former president off stage.
The DISGRACED act’s primary sponsor, Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., suggested in April the bill would prevent Trump from receiving special treatment if he was sentenced to prison.Unfortunately, current law doesn’t anticipate how Secret Service protection would impact the felony prison sentence of a protectee—even a former President,” heone of his staffers over the weekend after she posted "don't miss next time" on social media in reference to Saturday's shooting.
