The union has been raising concerns about non-compliance in occupational health and safety standards in some of the department’s buildings.

Via an e-mailed statement, the union said its demands had been “perpetually ignored” by the department. “In December 2015, the national union marched to the Minister of Justice, Advocate Michael Masutha, to deliver a memorandum of demands. For the past four years the department has done nothing to improve the working conditions of our members.

“The offices of Masters in Marshal Street in Johannesburg are a danger not only to workers but to clients who also frequent the office for services. NEHAWU is worried about the safety and health of its members and workers and calls on the department to ensure that they comply with OHS standards.
