Double the number of festival-goers use a controversial pill-testing service at a Canberra music festival.

While the previous trials found many people were being sold low-purity drugs, that were not really what they advertised, organisers this year found the opposite to be the case.

Dr David Caldicott said in many cases purity levels were unexpectedly high, prompting plenty of warnings. "There was an awful lot — 86 per cent of what we tested returned positives for really rather high purity ecstasy or MDMA," he said. He said when that was explained to the person who had brought in the drugs, many said they planned to either take less of it, or not take it at all.

"There's no intervention that stops all people consuming drugs, but that's not really our goal," he said."And if we can change the way people are using drugs to start with, then we might be able to change their attitude to drugs in their entirety.""We only found one of those last year, so that's clearly becoming established in the market," he said.Dr Caldicott said one person brought in what seemed to be a breath mint.

Why do you think that drug testing saving kids lives is controversial. What's happening at ABC, really falling away in quality.

They acknowledge that the purity is an issue but they will not admit that it is only half the danger and without testing the pill taker you can't tell what dose is safe to take, so it is only a matter of time before some kid dies anyway and they face litigation from their family.

Oh wow my mind is so blown right now! I had no idea that drugs could be dangerours.

I think this is a great service to keep kids that are doing drugs safe! I know the ideal thing would be for them to quit doing drugs all together but for some .. that will never happen and that’s the sad truth but atleast with this service they know what they’re taking! ✌️

In other news - DRUGS ARE DANGEROUS! That’s why they’re illegal and these are drugs people are taking for fun not people who are addicted. It’s why pill testing is so different to the safe injecting rooms

Okay this may just be me, I am confused about the figures '171 substances were tested' but '230 festival-goers..used the pill-testing service'. Were the seven 'potentially deadly' samples from 171 tests or 230?

You mean pill testing works?

Let the Darwinian effect take hold.

Australia's second pill testing trial in Canberra aims to reduce drug-related harmPill testing advocates say a second trial could help medical teams understand the make-up of drugs currently in circulation and lead to a change in pill testing policy. As much as I'm in favour of pill testing, it cannot be presented as a magic bullet. People will still die. As often? Hopefully not; but it's not a catch-all. For a start, many simply won't use the service. There will always be a risk to taking drugs.

Australia's second pill testing trial in Canberra 'overwhelmingly successful', organisers sayOrganisers of Australia's second-ever pill testing trial have praised it as a success. The will always be people who decide to take illegal drugs and risk their life, no matter what advice. Having read everything I can find about the 2nd trial & visiting the service yesterday, it seems everyone has 'praised it as a success'. The organisers have every right to feel proud, however they'll undoubtedly rely on independent evaluation as a real measure of success.
