A veteran police officer became emotional Thursday as he testified about his discovery of two murdered girls in an Oak Bay apartment suite.
The officer — Const. Piotr Ulanowski — determined that there was blood on the floors and walls and what appeared to be the body of a girl on a bed. The two men entered the suite with Ulanowski taking the lead, said Martin. The apartment was dark, requiring the two officers to use their flashlights, he said. Martin said he took his firearm out and entered the suite, finding blood on the floor and blood on a door frame.
“There was nobody else present in the bedroom except a small child on the bed,” Martin told the jury. Martin said he couldn’t find a pulse and noted that the child was cool to the touch and appeared “considerably stiffer” than he would have anticipated. The girl had what appeared to be blood on her upper body and some lacerations, he said.
The second girl was also cold to the touch, had no pulse and appeared to have lacerations on her body, said the officer. The two girls died of multiple stab wounds.“No, in my 31 years of policing,” said Martin.Martin teared up when he explained how he had misgivings about having another police officer who had arrived at the scene check the girls again to see if they had a pulse.
