Advocates urge Austin to enhance homeless support after Supreme Court ruling allows criminal punishment of unhoused without shelter access.

Advocates in Austin call for improved support programs for the homeless community following a Supreme Court ruling allowing cities to criminally punish unhoused individuals, even without available shelter options. Advocates are asking the city of Austin to do more to help the unhoused in the wake of a Supreme Court decision which allows cities toMembers from Austin Mutual Aid and VOCAL Texas shared their experiences about how homelessness has impacted them.

Denver says he’s been in Austin since 2012. He says his experience in the Austin homeless community has been hard. “It’s like there’s a few that really want to help us, and there’s a few that really just want to get rid of us.” said Denver. Alfredo Reyes Jr. is a military veteran. He says he’s been homeless for 7 1/2 years. He believes it’s his right to be housed and oftentimes, people don’t understand what the homeless community is going through. “It is a process that you have to go through. It took me a year and a half just to get the rapid rehousing,” he said.founder Matt Mackowiak says the city has failed the homeless community. “Happy to admit our system in this city has failed them,” he said.

Denver says one city program which helped him was the “Up Together” program which was nationally founded in 2011 in Oakland, California. Denver says the city of Austin should look at other cities’ models for caring for the homeless.
