The district court’s ruling also blocked laws requiring county officials to reject voter registration applications from undocumented immigrants, instead of trying to verify their citizenship statuses. The Republicans claimed the Constitution gives Arizona lawmakers the authority to qualify the state’s in-person and mail-in voters. They added that the National Voter Registration Act, which aims to increase the number of eligible voters, could infringe on that power.
A 2018 order requiring Arizona to simplify its voter registration forms following a lawsuit with the League of United Latin American Citizens also sparked criticism from the Republicans.
