The Supreme Court’s ruling granting presidents immunity for official acts is delaying the cases against former President Donald Trump past Election Day.

FILE - Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump enters at a campaign event, June 18, 2024, in Racine, Wis.

The Supreme Court’s ruling barred prosecutors from using Trump’s conversations with the Justice Department after President Joe Biden won the election in 2020 as evidence and other key pieces of the special counsel’s case could also be tossed under the immunity granted for “official acts.” While the legal troubles are not going away, the delays of all the remaining trials are a stark contrast from where Trump found himselfwhen there was a possibility he could be forced to spend more time in courtrooms than on the campaign trail.

Polling taken since the conviction in Manhattan found a slight shift toward Biden in the race, though that trend may be reversed after aBiden criticized the Supreme Court’s decision in brief remarks from the White House on Monday evening, saying that it sets a dangerous new precedent and that the American people had a right to know what happened on Jan. 6 before voting in the Nov. 5 election.
