Mohammad Farooq, 28, has been standing trial at Sheffield Crown Court

A man has been found GUILTY of plotting to bomb a hospital in Leeds with the hope of 'killing as many nurses as possible'.

Opening the trial last month, prosecutor Jonathan Sandiford KC said Farooq had immersed himself in an "extremist Islamic ideology" and that his "plan A" had been to attack RAF Menwith Hill, which is a base in North Yorkshire used by the United States. Mr Sandiford said "two pieces of good fortune intervened" to stop the attack that day. The first was that a bomb threat he sent in a text to an off-duty nurse in order to lure people to the car park where he was waiting with the bomb was not seen for almost an hour, and the full-scale evacuation he had hoped for did not happen.

Mr Sandiford said the defendant told Mr Newby about his plan to take the bomb into the hospital and "kill as many nurses as possible". He said: "Mr Newby stayed with the defendant, keeping him engaged and calm. An investigation found Farooq had become self-radicalised by accessing extremist material and propaganda online.
