The top US court ruled Donald Trump has immunity for actions he took in office, a major blow to his trial on charges of trying to overrun the 2020 election.

| The US Supreme Court ruled Donald Trump has broad immunity from criminal prosecution for actions taken in office as president, dealing a major blow to his prosecution on charges of election interference.

The major victory for Trump comes as US President Biden reels from a disastrous performance at the first televised debate last week between the pair watched by millions of Americans. He sought to use the decision to boost his fund-raising efforts, sending an email to supporters asking for donations. “On the cusp of our huge victory, we need to show crooked joe we will not be intimidated!”In a scathing dissent, liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor said the decision made a mockery of the court.

At the heart of the Supreme Court’s decision is the difference between a president’s official and unofficial acts.
