The universal moral relevance of the Ten Commandments is not to be doubted; that’s not the issue. The problem is how the sacred text is used. That’s what’s heretical, writes Father Joshua Whitfield.The bills put before state legislatures constitute their own odd genre. I’ve never really understood it: why so many nonsense bills, most never to become law, are proposed all over the country year after year. Like most legislative performance art, most of it’s silly.

Though the law in Louisiana, and others like it, are not, to be fair, as silly as the other instances of legislative performance art I’ve mentioned. The Ten Commandments have indeed contributed to the moral traditions of the world, America included, and to deny that or to erase it from the moral education of our children would be as ignorant as it is dangerous.
