California bars to offer drug testing kits for drinks with new law starting July

Staff members at California bars and night clubs will soon be required to offer drug testing kits to patrons who want to test their drinks., meaning bars and night clubs authorized to sell beer, wine, as well as distilled spirits for consumption on site. The testing kits will be provided either for free or a reasonable cost.

Lammers said she’s hopeful the kits will help enhance public safety, though she wants to see state officials offer more guidance. Devin Blankenship is a public information officer with the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control who said ABC expects about 2,500 licensees to start offering drug testing kits once the law starts.

“It does have the specifics on what the tests have to do in terms of the substance, which includes ketamine, GHB, it is a wide variety,” Blankenship said of the law. “They aren’t right now mandating specific tests. You can have test strips, stickers, straws, whatever’s out there.”
