Lawyer said accused's actions were “unpleasant and unsavoury in nature”

A man who threatened to share a naked video of his former landlord if he wasn’t given back a cash deposit for a property he rented was spared jail on Friday.

Branding the blackmail offence “nasty”, Judge Donna McColgan KC handed the 39-year old Fijian national a 12-month sentence, which was suspended for three years. Following the report to police, Burekama was arrested on August 13, 2023. He made admissions and told officers he had rented property from the injured party and had expected his deposit back.

Acknowledging Burekama’s actions were “unpleasant and unsavoury in nature”, the barrister said the threat was “short-lived” and done whilst under the influence of alcohol.
