The decision drew strong condemnation from Khan’s supporters and his party who were expecting the couple to be freed on bail.

An appeals court in Pakistan has upheld the conviction and seven-year prison sentence of former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife for their 2018 marriage which was found to be unlawful, officials said.

In February, Khan and his wife were sentenced to seven years in prison after a court concluded that the couple violated the law that a woman must wait three months before marrying again. Since his ousting from power in 2022 through a no-confidence vote in the parliament, Khan has been facing more than 150 court cases, including inciting people to violence after his arrest in May 2023. He is serving multiple prison terms at Adiala prison in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.
