Naomi Elkins, 27, is accused of drowning her two small children in their Lakewood home, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said.told investigators she “needed to kill the children religious purposes” after having “concerning thoughts” days leading up to the Tuesday night attacks at her Lakewood apartment that also including stabbing one of the girls in the stomach, authorities said.
Elkins, who works at a daycare in Lakewood, told investigators she had been having “concerning thoughts” for a couple of days, authorities said in court documents. She took her children to work with her on Monday, and spent that night praying about the thoughts, authorities said. Elkins told investigators she used a serrated knife to stab the 1-year-old girl in the stomach and back before she placed the child on a couch while she ran a bath, authorities said. Elkins then brought the 1-year-old to the bathroom where she held the girl’s head under the water for two to three minutes, authorities said.
