A veteran lawyer has called on Australia’s lawmakers to “have a good look” at the Gregory Lynn trial, warning the verdict may have provided a “playbook” for people wanting to get away with murder.

A veteran lawyer has called on lawmakers to"have a good look" at the Gregory Lynn trial, warning it may have provided a “playbook” for people wanting to get away with murder.

According to Thomson Geer Partner Justin Quill, the case was “extraordinary for a whole stack of reasons”, including the fact the defendant had given evidence during the trial, which the lawyer described as “very rare”.But it was the nature of the evidence Lynn had given, and the fact it had led to a split verdict from the jury, that Mr Quill thought would have the biggest implications.

“Destroy the evidence and then turn up to court and say to the prosecution, ‘you have to prove with evidence that I'm guilty, I don't have to prove that I'm not guilty, you have to prove with evidence that I'm guilty. And by the way, I destroyed the evidence.’ During the trial, Lynn claimed the two campers he was accused of murdering were accidentally killed in separate struggles involving a shotgun and a kitchen knife after a dispute with Mr Hill over his drone.

“It's somewhere in between. It is possible that… they were so unsure that they decided to have a compromise verdict. We'll just never know,” he said.
