The Paris appeals court is expected to rule on the validity of an international arrest warrant for Syrian President Bashar Assad for alleged complicity in crimes against humanity during the country's civil war.

The Paris appeals court is expected to decide on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, whether to uphold an arrest warrant for Syrian President Bashar Assad that France issued last year for alleged complicity in war crimes during Syria’s civil war.

In May, French anti-terrorism prosecutors asked magistrates of the Paris appeals court to rule on lifting the arrest warrant for President Assad, saying he has absolute immunity as a serving head of state. The prosecutors did not challenge the warrants for Assad’s brother and the two generals during a closed hearing on the issue on May 15.
