A hearing expected to lead to the release of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has gotten underway at the U.S. district court in Saipan.

The top Australian diplomat in the United Kingdom accompanied Assange on the flight.

Australia for years has been calling on the U.S. government to drop the case against Assange, arguing there's a disconnect between the treatment of Assange and Manning.
