Seattle city leaders are now looking to strengthen laws against illegal street racing.

FILE - This photo shows an illegal Seattle street racing event, or sideshow, in Capitol Hill before a quadruple shooting took place on July 23, 2023.

Just after midnight Sunday, police were called to the 1100 block of Alaskan Way for about 100 vehicles that were gathered in a private parking lot revving their engines.“The team was out and we started targeting reckless driving, people driving without a visible license plate, no lights on,” Nelson said.

A short time late, a person was hit by a driver involved in a street race and suffered significant injuries, according to police. It is now being investigated as a hit-and-run. The racing group continued to move around, which police said presents serious public safety concerns. “This is a clear and present danger, and as you saw from the video, this danger is close," Kettle said.. Under that law, vehicles can be impounded for 72 hours after the first citation for illegal street racing. If there is a second offense, the car could be forfeited if the owner is convicted.
