The president hasn’t publicly supported reform measures before.

, Democrats have an opening to debate reform measures for the court, such as term limits for justices or expanding the number of seats. Biden hasn’t supported any of these proposals, so I asked my Post Opinions colleagues Megan McArdle and Ruth Marcus:For years, Republican candidates used the Supreme Court as a galvanizing issue.

On a separate, Supreme Court-related front, here’s a twist for Trump supporters hoping the Supreme Court will soon decide that he has presidential immunity from criminal prosecution: “One of the wildest things about this potential ruling is that it could grant Biden near-dictatorial powers with months remaining in his term,” argues David Faris, an associate professor of political science at Roosevelt University.

Without any fear of legal consequences, the president could declare martial law at will, deploy the military against American citizens and cities, personally murder critics, journalists, and rivals, or issue a legal memo suspending the U.S. Constitution indefinitely. The only real constraint on the president’s powers in a world in which Justice Samuel Alito and his friends decide that Donald Trump exists beyond the rule of law is the willingness of other people to carry out the orders.
