Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has welcomed the arrest of a suspect in the murder of City official Wendy Kloppers at the Delft Symphony Way housing project site on 16 February 2023. The shooting was part of a larger wave of violence directed at the housing project, which included gasoline bombings.Kloppers was on duty when she was shot in an incident of mistaken identity, believed to be part of a series of attacks carried out by the so-called ‘construction mafia’.

According to SAPS, the 40-year-old suspect turned himself in yesterday after an investigation and is scheduled to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court this morning.here‘We hope this arrest is the first step towards full justice for Wendy’s family and colleagues, and for the many unseen beneficiaries of the Delft Symphony Way housing project impacted by violent disruptions at the time of the brazen murder on-site.

‘The City’s R1 million reward still stands for information leading to the prosecution of those behind the murder of Ms Kloppers. Certainly, this single suspect never acted alone. We are closely following developments and call on the public to come forward with information to assist the prosecution,’ said Hill-Lewis.

In March 2023, a private donor increased the City’s reward to R1 million. General rewards are also being offered for information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of those involved in extortion and violence against City projects and employees. This is part of Mayor Hill-Lewis’ metro-wide anti-extortion campaign, ‘Enough. Genoeg. Kwanele,’ which launched last year.
