The Taoiseach has welcomed the decision of Aer Lingus and unions to separately meet with the Labour Court tomorrow.
Both sides described the move as "positive" and said they were hopeful that they could meet this week. A total of 244 flights have been cancelled - affecting 35,000 passengers - as pilots are due to take part in a five-day work-to-rule strike from Wednesday. This means they will not work outside of their rostered hours.Tánaiste Micheál Martin said the degree to which the needs of the Irish public are being ignored by both Aer Lingus management and pilots is “shocking”.
He added: “This is the one time in the year that they get an opportunity to travel for their holidays. They've planned for these, they've saved for these - it's shocking that they're being ignored, and wilfully, if you like, put to one side in this battle between the management of Aer Lingus and unions."
He further claimed that the union has created a precondition where they will “only discuss the dispute in the context of their 24% pay claim”.
