The recently passed National Transport Act amendment bill will give transport minister Sindisiwe Chikunga some powers to set ride-hailing prices, rather than leaving it up to the platforms., E-Hailing Partners Council secretary Melithemba Mnguni says ride-hailing operators are excited about the long overdue amendments.
Mnguni said ride-hailing platforms were previously against the amendment allowing the minister to set prices and tried to have it scrapped. However, Bolt operator and chairperson of the Ekurhuleni e-hailing association, Kenny Moretsele, highlighted a potential challenge that could arise from the amended regulations.
Concerns over the ride-hailing industry’s inability to obtain operating licences have been around for years.
