Several New York City officials on Monday condemned the potential creation of a migrant shelter at a local church.
The shelter at the Faith United Methodist Church in Port Richmond would support 15 single males who are in the process of seeking asylum in the U.S. Republican Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella in a “Some people in this community wake up every day trying to figure out, volunteers, ‘how do we make Portland Richmond better?’” he said. “And then along comes the agencies say, ‘guess what? Here’s a way we can make it better. We’re gonna dump a migrant shelter right in the middle of your neighborhood.’”Also opposing the plan was New York City Councilwoman Kamillah Hanks, D-District 49.
We stand here today as elected officials on behalf of our constituency, to vehemently, vehemently oppose the opening of this migrant shelter,” she said. “The residents of this district are tired constantly waking up one day to find that an institution they trusted has made the decision that they feel will have a negative impact on their community and their safety.”“These are churches, these are community centers,” he said.
Other bipartisan groups of city leaders are also beginning to speak out against the amount of aid offered to incoming migrants. Lawmakers this monthJackson Walker on X at @_jlwalker_ for the latest trending national news. Have a news tip? Send it to jacwalker@sbgtv.com.
