Jurors in the murder trial of Keith Kerinauia have been offered two explanations for the fatal stabbing of Declan Laverty. Here's what they will have to consider.

Keith Kerinauia is on trial for the alleged murder of Darwin bottle shop worker Declan Laverty, who was fatally stabbed at work in 2023.Was the fatal stabbing of Darwin bottle shop worker Declan Laverty a "callous" murder, or was it a tragedy resulting from the "stupidity" of two young men?

The Northern Territory Supreme Court trial, which started on June 7 and was originally set down for 10 days, has heard evidence from 20 witnesses, including Mr Kerinauia. The jury will now have to decide beyond reasonable doubt whether Mr Kerinauia acted in self-defence, or if he intended to cause death or serious harm to Mr Laverty.

In his evidence, Mr Kerinauia described seeing Mr Laverty "lunging" at him with a blade before engaging in the fight, and said he "assumed" the weapon was a box cutter. The trial earlier heard evidence from Mr Kerinauia's cousin, Edward Rioli, who told the court the accused seemed "worried" about Mr Laverty and said he'd "stabbed a guy in the lung" as they left the scene.

The defence then replayed CCTV footage to the court, showing the incident second by second and pointing to moments that appeared to show Mr Laverty advancing toward Mr Kerinauia.
