What exactly did Menendez want from the AG when he sat down to talk to him about a criminal case? But little could have prepared him for his appearance in New York last week, this time as a key witness in the corruption trial of U.S. Sen., where he was called to recount a still shocking meeting he had with the once-powerful Democrat when Grewal was then serving as New Jersey’s attorney general and the state’s top law enforcement officer.
Prosecutors have charged that Menendez, who sat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was paid off for taking actions that benefitted the government of Egypt on behalf of his wife, Nadine, and a New Jersey businessman, Wael Hana, who won a lucrative commercial contract to certify Halal meat intended for export to Egypt.
Uribe testified on Friday that he was close friends with Hana, who told him in early 2018 that a New Jersey state criminal investigation focusing on the trucking business of a friend of his, and his own insurance business, could be largely put to rest if he was willing to spend $200,000 to $250,000. “I agreed with Nadine Menendez and other people to provide a car for Nadine in order to get the power and influence of Mr. Menendez to help me get a better resolution for one of my associates that was being charged on a criminal matter, and to stop ongoing investigations that could lead to my daughter and my family members,” he told the court.“I wanted to be in the good grace of the senator,” he said.
“I remember standing in front of the car. At the time we had a State Trooper detail with us,” said Grewal. “I remember before walking into the car, looking at each other and I believe Andrew said to me, ‘Whoa, that was gross.’” “He didn’t blurt out the name of any particular defendant or any particular case?” asked Avi Weitzman.“He didn’t even ask you to call the prosecutors on any particular case, right?”While the defense might argue that Menendez’s actions on behalf of constituents could be unethical but not criminal, the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York, which is trying the case, is painting a dark picture.
