Abandoned Babies,Elsa

The saga started in 2017, and this week, a court challenge revealed new details about three newborns left within kilometres of each other in east London. The 'extremely rare' occurrence has put the spotlight on child abandonment — a phenomenon some say is poorly understood.

"We haven't heard of this exact situation before, where there have been three siblings abandoned in succession," said Dr Jo Muller, a clinical psychologist

The saga in London began in September 2017 when a baby — subsequently named Harry — was found in a park near Balaam Street, Newham. The night she was discovered, temperatures in London plunged around -5 degrees Celsius. The baby was named Elsa, after a character from the Disney movie Frozen. "It could be that the father has come to this conclusion with the mother, that this is something to do. It could be that the mother has a difficult relationship with the father.

Police are appealing for information about a woman seen wearing a large dark coat and a backpack in the area Elsa was found."We also had to be mindful of the sensitivities that exist now all of the children are being cared for," Detective Inspector Humm said.Newham, the borough where the children were abandoned, is 8km east of central London and has higher rates of poverty when compared to other areas of the city.

Dr Muller said while little was known about the mother, there was one thing we could be confident in.
