Retired Judge David S. Tatel issued a warning about the nation's highest court depleting 'the reservoir of public confidence.'

In his upcoming memoir, retired Judge David S. Tatel wrote that he stepped down from his position on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit due to the U.S. Supreme Court's 'low regard' for judicial principles, according to a Friday report by The Washington Post. The Supreme Court is facing growing scrutiny over concerns about recent decisions as well as ethical concerns.

He also warned that while neutral judging 'fosters public trust in the rule of law,' judging that could be 'based on a preordained agenda, not on text or precedent or deference, depletes the reservoir of public confidence.'Newsweek reached out to the Supreme Court's public information office via its contact form and Tatel's publisher Hachette Book Group via email for comment.
