Justices don’t abandon their personal beliefs when they put on a black robe. Yet putting aside those personal beliefs and deciding cases according to the law is essential.

In the 1960s, the Philadelphia Eagles hired a coach named Joe Kuharik. At the time, he was the only Notre Dame football coach with a losing record. The Eagles gave him a 15-year contract. During that era, when I was in high school, I had season tickets with some friends. The tickets cost $75 for the entire season. Despite the bargain price, it was not worth it. The Eagles lost nearly every home game. What made it tolerable was being a member of the “Joe Must Go Club.

In 2008, I heard that the Alaska Bar Association was attempting to persuade Justice Alito to deliver an address at its annual convention. I was told that Justice Alito was on the fence. Perhaps he had not yet been offered that free fishing trip that has been in the recent news. The president of the Bar Association was married to a friend of mine from high school. I told him to let the justice know that if he came to Alaska, I would show him my collection of 1964 Phillies cards.
