Donald Trump has been found guilty of falsifying business records to cover up an affair with a porn star, making him the first former US president in history to be criminally convicted.
The 12-member jury announced it had found Trump guilty on all 34 counts he faced. Unanimity was required for any verdict. Justice Juan Merchan set sentencing for July 11, three days before the start of the Republican National Convention expected to formally nominate Trump for president. In theory, Trump could be sworn in from jail on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2025, if he were to unseat President Joe Biden.BloombergJurors convicted Trump on all 34 counts after deliberating for 9½ hours. As the verdict was read, he sat stone-faced in court, looking down.
It will most likely take several months for Judge Juan Merchan, who oversaw the case, to decide whether to sentence Trump to prison.He faces a maximum sentence of four years in prison, though others convicted of that crime often receive shorter sentences, fines or probation. Incarceration would not prevent him from campaigning, or taking office if he were to win.
“There was no fraud, there was no conspiracy,” Trump said before heading into the court on Thursday morning. “This is a very sad day for America. The whole world is watching.”
