New Zealand’s gun-control laws have failed in parliament four times over the past 20 years. That was before a white supremacist laid siege to two mosques in the city of Christchurch on March 15th, killing 50 people. This week a bill to ban the kind of high-powered semi-automatic weapons that he used was introduced; everyNew Zealand has one of the world’s highest rates of gun ownership, with 26 guns per 100 people.
Firearm-related suicides and homicides fell after the legislation passed. But firearm deaths had already been falling before 1996, and the pace did not notably accelerate. Moreover, gun violence was declining in many other rich countries, few of which had adopted stricter gun laws. . Between 1980 and 1996 there were 13 incidents in which five or more victims were shot to death. There has been just one since. But until Christchurch, New Zealand had not seen any mass shootings in over 20 years, despite the many semi-automatic rifles.
This suggests that social norms have been New Zealand’s best defence against mass shootings. But as Philip Alpers of the University of Sydney notes, the killer in Christchurch would simply not have been able to buy such deadly weapons in his home country, Australia.
So there is one incident and The NZ government goes off into the deep end.
So given its not happened on 20 years is an acceptable casualty frequency? The question should be why does anyone want or need a firearm of ANY description in New Zealand?
Exactly. The issue is not the law abiding citizen, it’s the one who doesn’t care about laws. Anyone want to wager whether criminals in NZ did NOT comply with the law and still hold guns?
I thought maybe you were having an intelligent thought for a moment. Then you said this: 'A similar law in Australia largely eliminated mass killings'
One day I visited a restaurant. I dined full plate curry. After one and half hour I vomited the shit due to indigestion. From that day I stopped eating curry. Gun-control is like stopping to eat curry. This would weaken ordinary citizens' security.
Why were they being sold in the first place?!
US has no significant reasons to not the same. Gun makers will lost money but who cares about gin makers if the price is human lives
So what you're saying is, guns don't cause violence. Forcing opposing cultures to share the same space causes violence.
So terrorism worked in stripping people of their rights.
This is because of radical Islam..all over the world Muslims are fleeing their failed states ..Islam has failed them their culture not condusive to a modern world ..a disaster now the west must pick up the pieces of this failure ..feed them clothe them enough
Why would any civilised society allow anyone but the police & the military to have such weapons? Sheer stupidity.
they drafted those laws SOOOO very quickly. It was incredible really
If someone REALLY wants to kill lots of people they will simply make a bomb and have it go off in a busy place. The gun is not the main issue. The issue is the pen for it is far mightier than the sword.
