The U.S. Department of Justice announced an antitrust lawsuit against the live concert ticket seller Live Nation-Ticketmaster

FILE - Taylor Swift performs at the Paris Le Defense Arena as a part of her Eras Tour concert in Paris, May 9, 2024. The U.S. Justice Department was expected to file a sweeping antitrust lawsuit against Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation Entertainment, on Thursday, May 23, 2024. The ticket seller sparked outrage in November 2022 when its site crashed during a presale event for a Taylor Swift stadium tour.

The lawsuit seeks to restore competition in the industry and provide better choices at lower prices for fans. It also aims to open venue doors for working musicians and performance artists. The Justice Department accused Live Nation-Ticketmaster of engaging in exclusionary practices to fortify what it calls its "flywheel" - a self-reinforcing business model that captures fees from fans and uses that revenue to lock up artists and venues into long-term exclusive deals.

In 2022, Live Nation-Ticketmaster caused an uproar when it hosted a presale event for Taylor Swift tickets. The site crashed as fans and bots overwhelmed the site as people clamored for passes to the superstar's stadium tour, the company said at the time. In the wake of the crash, it canceled the next sale, citing "insufficient" inventory.
