WA to get Australia's toughest knife laws, inspired by Queensland's 'Jack's Law'

Inspired by Queensland's Jack's law, the legislation will effectively allow officers to search people in any public place for knives.The WA government will introduce knife laws it says will be "the toughest in the country", effectively allowing officers to scan people in any public place even if they are not suspected of carrying a weapon.

Senior police officers will be able to order the formation of temporary KWAs in any public space, such as shopping centres, bus stops, train stations, and sporting or entertainment events. The proposed changes would also increase penalties for people who illegally own a knife and people who sell knives to minors.

When population growth is factored in, it means the rate of patients sent to hospital by knife assaults has decreased over that time. However, the cause of the stabbing was not recorded in the St John Ambulance data, with a note clarifying it includes "a variety of self-inflicted, accidental or intentional wounds".
