Mr Albanese on Tuesday refused to weigh in on prosecutor Karim Khan’s bid to arrest Mr Netanyahu, saying he did not comment on matters before the courts. “But I think the pressure at the moment needs to be for like-minded countries that share our values to stand shoulder to shoulder, for them to be no different, and to put pressure on the ICC to make sure that this antisemitic stance that they’ve taken does not advance.”
Mr Khan has applied to a panel of the court’s judges for arrest warrants for Mr Netanyahu and Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as the Hamas mastermind of the October 7 terrorist attack, Yahya Sinwar, and two other Hamas leaders.Israel does not recognise the court’s jurisdiction, but the arrest warrant would be a de facto travel ban because Mr Netanyahu would face arrest if he stepped foot in a signatory country, which includes Australia and all of Europe.
