Advocates of ending a subminimum wage for tipped workers in Illinois acknowledged that legislation is unlikely to move before lawmakers adjourn later this week.

State Sen. Lakesia Collins, D-Chicago, talks about the importance of boosting base pay for all tipped workers outside of the state Capitol in Springfield on Feb. 6, 2024. Legislation to eliminate the subminimum wage for tipped workers in the state is unlikely to pass this session.

State Rep. Elizabeth “Lisa” Hernandez noted that the measure “made more progress than ever” and did receive a favorable vote in the House Labor and Commerce Committee. But the Illinois Restaurant Association has continued to fight a statewide measure and some Democrats, including Chicago Reps. Angelica Guerrero-Cuellar and Curtis Tarver, have sided with the association, citing potential costs to small businesses.
