Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says there is “nothing to be served” by the ongoing incarceration of Julian Assange, after the Wikileaks founder secured a major legal win overseas.

PM says nothing to be gained by ‘ongoing incarceration’ of Assange as Wikileaks founder wins right to appeal US extradition

These charges include the obtaining, receiving and disclosing of classified information which appeared on the WikiLeaks site in 2010. US lawyers have claimed Mr Assange’s failure to redact some names published in the caches put lives at risk. When asked to comment on the legal development on Tuesday, Mr Albanese said the government’s position on the issue remains unchanged.

She said the WikiLeaks founder’s nationality as an Australian could potentially impact a trial in the US.
