Nova Scotia delays new biodiversity legislation, saying more work required

The Liberal government had planned to pass the bill this session, saying it lacked the authority or regulatory powers it needs to manage the province's biodiversity.

Rankin says the bill will still pass during the current government's mandate, but there will be more consultation with industry, private landowners and environmental groups. The yet-to-be-drafted regulations will be key when it comes to defining which species need further protection and in setting out the minister's powers to issue emergency orders around land use.
