The senior senator from New Jersey has not publicly ruled out an independent Senate run amid his criminal trial.

Republicans are hoping to flip New Jersey's Senate seat in November as embattled Democratic Senator Bob Menendez mulls an independent run amid his criminal trial, but polls show that Representative Andy Kim, a fellow Democrat, holds an early lead over his rivals.Menendez is on trial after being indicted on corruption charges.

The FDU poll, which surveyed 809 registered voters between April 1 and 8, showed Kim leading Republicans Mendham Borough Mayor Christine Serrano Glassner and the real-estate developer Curtis Bashaw.In a head-to-head against Serrano Glassner, Kim led by 10 points, winning 49-39. Against Bashaw, Kim held a 9-point lead, winning 47-38, the poll showed.If Menendez decided to run as an independent, the poll found, Kim's lead would shrink.
