A trial between the NHS and Korean firm LUNIT has been hailed by Rishi Sunak and the South Korean PM taking place this week, the Prime Minister heralded the opportunities of the emerging technology but also warned that tech giants need to do more to address its dangers.
The two leaders pointed as an example to a collaboration between the NHS and Korean firm LUNIT on “a trial of AI-powered breast cancer detection, which promises to improve the accuracy and speed of diagnosis”. They added: “We all know how vital early detection is – so just imagine what improvements here could mean for millions of women and their families.”
Until now, UK trials have been focused on using AI tools to retrospectively analyse historic mammograms to judge the accuracy and efficiency of the software. In their article, Mr Sunak and Mr Yoon warned that as well as maximising the benefits of AI, leaders would need to do more to combat the potential dangers.
The Government has stopped short of passing wide-ranging regulation on AI technology, relying instead on voluntary agreements with the largest firms developing it.
