On Saturday, the youth-focussed Future Forward party leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit attended a Bangkok police station to be formally charged with sedition. A first secretary from the Australian embassy was among a dozen diplomats present, from embassies including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and France.

Some diplomats shook Mr Thanathorn's hand as he entered the police station, where he stopped at the door to give supporters the three-fingered salute borrowed from the movie The Hunger Games, that has become a symbol of defiance against the Thai junta.
