The bill was introduced in the year after the death of Daniel Prude, who died after he was taken into custody by Rochester police during a mental hygiene arrest back in March 2020, prompting several protests. No charges were brought against the officers involved in Prude's arrest after the attorney general's office found they had followed their training.
"I think the most exciting thing about the way that it was passed is that unanimous and there was bipartisan support for the bill," said Martin. "For us that means there is going to likely be support in the finance committee when it comes up there and it also means that people across New York State care about mental health they want to see a different transformative response when it comes to how we treat people in crisis.
