Do Anchorage Police Wear Body Cameras News

Police Officer Shooting

For the first time, an Anchorage Police Department officer has fatally shot someone while wearing a body camera, a newer tool being used by police. This will be the first test of the system related to when — and if — video will be released to the public.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - For the first time, a police officer with the Anchorage Police Department fatally shot someone while wearing a body camera, a newer tool being used by police.

“What we’re worried about is there’s no timeline. It could be months,” Rich Curtner with the Alaska Black Caucus Justice Committee said Friday afternoon. “A reasonable timeline would be no longer than 10 days.”for Anchorage Police Department officers with Proposition 4 passing with nearly 54% of voters in favor of the property tax increase, which was expected to raise $1.84 million annually.

According to police, the officers approached the apartment in two teams, and Handy “raised a long gun towards the officers” before they fired their guns at him. Part of APD policy says that body cameras “should not be released until the court proceedings and/or investigation is closed.” “We understand there may be questions due to the circulating video. This is an ongoing investigation, and our involved officers deserve due process,” Cross wrote in an online news release. “After the Office of Special Prosecutions has concluded the criminal portion of the investigation, and APD’s Internal Affairs has concluded the procedural portion, we will be able to address any outstanding questions.
