In what is seen as a desperate move by the ANC just two weeks before most South Africans go to the polls on 29 May, the presidency announced on Monday that President Cyril Ramaphosa will sign the controversial National Health Insurance Bill into law on Wednesday, 15 May.
“President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Wednesday, 15 May 2024, publicly sign into law the NHI Bill which directs the transformation of the South Africa’s health care system to achieve universal coverage for health services and, through this, overcome critical socio-economic imbalances and inequities of the past,” the presidency said in a media alert.
“We believe that the legislation, in its current form, is unimplementable and damaging to the country’s healthcare sector, to the economy more broadly and to investor confidence,” it said in a statement released late on Monday evening.
