Those accessing State’s family courts have to avail of the ‘Cinderella service’ of the legal system, says Dr Geoffrey Shannon

It is “imperative” that safe contact centres for children to facilitate access arrangements are introduced, the special rapporteur for child protection, DrDr Shannon said a “dedicated family court structure” should be a priority, while there needed to be a “complete review” of the services that the State provided to children.

“Our services are tailored towards adults rather than towards children, and what we need now to do is gear our services towards children, because if we don’t the consequences will be life-long.” He also said those accessing the State’s family courts have to avail of the “Cinderella service” of the legal system.
