The National Tertiary Education Union has launched a legal bid to prevent the University of Wollongong's deal with the Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation going ahead after it was fast-tracked by the vice-chancellor.
In December, UOW vice-chancellor Paul Wellings bypassed the university's academic senate, which ordinarily approves new degrees, to fast-track approval of the Ramsay deal. "Our concerns are about procedural fairness and a lack of integrity in the decision-making process," said national president Alison Barnes.
Amid a heated national debate about the Ramsay Centre's initiatives, UOW was the first university to strike a deal to offer the Western civilisation degree. The university said it did not have concerns about academic freedom being compromised in the agreement. A lengthy meeting of the board — which advises the executive dean of the faculty on academic decisions — recommended that further consultation and refinement of the curriculum was required.
