GEORGE TOWN: Afraid of being hauled to court for accumulating 16 outstanding traffic summonses in the past four years, salesman Tommy Lee rushed to the police station in Jalan Patani to settle them all for half the price.

Although the 42-year-old declined to reveal the amount he paid, he confessed to borrowing money from his boss to wipe the slate clean.“I drive a van six days a week to deliver goods to customers.

“Maybe I was just unlucky; whenever I was on the phone, a policeman would appear from somewhere,” he said. Lee, who was recently slapped with a court order for one of his traffic offences, said settling the summonses during the half-price promotion period was definitely a better option.“Since my boss was willing to help me out, I don’t mind spending an hour to queue and pay the fines,” he said.

Thousands of people thronged the police station to settle their summonses during the two-day promotion which ends today.Among them was college student Mohamad Hamidi Yusuff, 19.“Although they don’t cost much, my parents are not paying for them,” he said.andylo@thestar.com.my
