'We're getting the balance right here' New divorce rules to 'end the blame game' would take six months and aim to improve relationships throughout and after separation, says Justice Secretary David Gauke

It follows the Supreme Court's rejection of a woman's appeal for divorce after her husband refused to agree a split.

The new rules will include a minimum timeframe of six months from petition stage to decree absolute - the legal document that ends a marriage. Why has it happened? Because the current fault-based divorce system is now seen by many to exacerbate the stress and tension of an already highly stressful time.

Under the current system, parents who need to continue to work together in their children's best interests can struggle to overcome feelings of hostility and bitterness caused by the use of the"fault" simply to satisfy a legal process. Mr Gauke said overhauling divorce law could help prevent conflict between parents, which in turn risk damaging their children's futures.

He said:"That's what can cause difficultly for the children but also it can cause difficulty for the parents themselves, so anything we can do to reduce that is, I think, incredibly important."

Every gold diggers dream...

Doesn’t really matter, because most sols just invented a load of vague twaddle anyway- UB required no proof. I didn’t even read mine, just forwarded to sol for signature & return. To this day don’t know what it said, & don’t care. Sign & goodbye, that’s that.

Don’t put any faith is this bungling idiot he can’t even sort out the UK’s divorce from the EU

Liar

Having failed to provide an answer to the UK's European problem, the Tories passed the decision to the people, ie, referendum, and they decided to leave the EU. That’s it. So even if they disobey the electorate, the damage is done

Govt should focus on strengthening the marriage than breaking it up. There is much more to this than just a couple arguing, the State is greatly to blame for family breakdowns & family separations. Housing plays a significant role in either making or breaking a family unit.

David Gauke is my pet name for my butt-hole. lol

Not happily married then😂 It is a good idea. 😁

Thats really good news . I have been married three times and have been really unlucky cos' none of them died .

If its anything like the way they're handling the divorce of UK & EU.....there's the incentive for married couples to stay together. DavidGauke CarolineLucas jessphillips SkyNews

It is said children actually cope better when a parent dies than when parents get divorced. Maybe the government should put in place a 1 week compulsory marriage class for every couple before they tie the knot.

If the Conservatives are behind it there will be something self-serving about the changes. Rich Tory donors looking for quick discreet/no-blame divorces.

I thought he was talking about the EU for a minute!

Does anyone really believe it's the divorce process that makes a marriage failing, and raising children between separated families, stressful and miserable?

Omg its not just the mother that uses the children as a tool the fathers do it as well. They also spread as many lies to the courts as women are capable of doing.

Good.

pity they're not getting the balance right on the causes of divorce-homeless-low pay living in B&B-having to use food bank to feed families-tory dystopia

I don't think two people who hate each other should remain together. But at the same time it's no surprise fewer men are getting married when the government makes it easier and easier for predominantly women to marry then devorce for money.

BBCPolitics This is a very helpful change, long overdue but welcome news.

Dont get married in the first place. Problem solved

BBCPolitics Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland... a.k.a. 'The children'

is it seriously discussing? really?

BBCPolitics No news about the Cooper-Letwin bill passing, BBCBreaking BBCPolitics bbclaurak ? Bias showing quite clearly again. Something historic happened last night, and you're nowhere, as usual.

Good move. There should be absolutely no govt. based road blocks if someone wants to end it.

BBCPolitics And how much avoidable bitterness has been endured over the past years while the Government has been avoiding this obviously needed change? Too late by far.

Russian revolution achieved this in 1918.

Forcing people who don't like one another to spend a further 6 months around each other will do what, now? As if the *marriage* they just shared didn't include any 'thinking time'!?

Not half as much fun as the BrexitShambles blame game

Must benefit the rich somehow or why bother.

Who are the idiots who want to keep together two people who do not wish to be together? Let me loose on them, I would like to cage them with man-eating tiger and ask them to get along.

You should make it clear- especially with ‘UK’ moniker- that this is purely English news about English divorce laws.

Will they be tackling emotional and psycological abuse when the mother starts using any children the couple may have to be coercive.

BBCPolitics That will feed the poor

BBCPolitics Talking about Brexit I presume.

Sick of Brexit related tweets now.
