Taxpayers will fork out tens of thousands of dollars after Monday's animal rights protests in Melbourne's CBD.

A large police operation was required to control protestors after activists shut down one of the city's busiest intersections during peak hour. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has condemned the protest, saying the government will support any civil lawsuits put forward by Australian farmers.
